Arnold Palmer

World-renowned golfer Palmer became a champion of prostate cancer awareness after being diagnosed with the disease in 1997. Though he had no symptoms of an enlarged prostate, he had been getting routine physicals that included a PSA test. The PSA results rose steadily each year until Palmer’s physician recommend a biopsy. “When I first heard the word cancer, I didn’t want to say it out loud,” Palmer told Everyday Health.

Palmer, who opted to have a prostatectomy, opened a cancer research facility, the Arnold Palmer Pavilion in his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 2012. He passed away from heart complications in 2016 at age 87.
