Nelson Mandela

Former South African President Mandela was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001 at age 83. In 1985, while imprisoned by the apartheid government, Mandela was found to have an enlarged prostate, which was causing a urinary blockage. Part of the gland was removed, and he underwent radiation and anti-antigen hormonal treatment. In 2001, Mandela’s doctor, Louis Gecelter, MD, told The New York Times, “We’re quite confident that he should outgrow or outlive the cancer of the prostate.” Mandela also had health issues involving his lungs, stomach and eyes. He died at age 95 in December 2013.
