Nelson Mandela

The legendary apartheid-fighter and then president of postapartheid South Africa (until 1999) announced in 2012 that he would undergo radiation therapy for cancer in his prostate, most of which had already been removed years ago after tumors were discovered there. The Nelson Mandela Foundation said that cancer would not decrease his life span, but the icon, already 83, died a year later of respiratory infection.
