Rudy Giuliani
Giuliani, then-mayor of New York City, was facing Hillary Clinton for a U.S. Senate seat in 2000 when he learned that he had prostate cancer. He dropped out of the race and, a few months later, underwent radioactive seed implantation (requiring only a local anesthetic) rather than surgery. Prior to that, he had been undergoing hormone treatment, which often precedes radiation therapy. Giuliani told The New York Times that dealing with cancer had made him a kinder, gentler person. “You empathize with people more,” he said. Last year, Giuliani, 73, devoted much of his 16th cancer-free year to being a cheerleader for President Donald Trump. But he still didn’t get a place in Trump’s cabinet.
