After revealing earlier this year that her mom’s cancer had recurred, pop star Taylor Swift is singing about the experience. Her new album, Lover, features a track dedicated to her mom, Andrea, and breaks down how her family has dealt with her cancer diagnosis, People reports.
On “Soon You’ll Get Better,” Swift sings, “And I hate to make this all about me / But who am I supposed to talk to? / What am I supposed to do? / If there’s no you.”
In 2015, Swift revealed to fans on Tumblr that her mother had been diagnosed with cancer. Although she kept the details of her condition and treatment private, she said her mom wanted to encourage people to remind their parents to get checked for cancer.
Unfortunately, in March, Swift revealed in a personal essay for Elle that Andrea was once again facing cancer. (Swift’s dad has also had cancer.)
On learning how to handle serious illness in her family, Swift said, “It’s taught me that there are real problems and then there’s everything else. My mom’s cancer is a real problem. I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress and prayers to real problems now.”
Swift recently discussed how hard it was to write the song “Soon You’ll Get Better,” in a YouTube Live event prior to the album’s release on August 23. “It was just a family decision whether to even put it on the album,” she said. “We as a family decided to put this on the album, and it’s something I’m so proud of, but it’s just really hard.”
Swift said she struggles to sing the song because it’s “hard to emotionally deal with” and said fans would know exactly what she meant as soon as they heard it. [You can listen to “Soon You’ll Get Better” above.]
